In askiadesign, there are three ways to create semi-open questions:
semi-open responses option on a closed question. This is best used if the interviewing mode is CATI, and the question is a brand list.Statement Other ADC 2.0 control in screen mode. For details, see the Knowledge Base article Statement Other. This topic is concerned with the first two methods.
This method should be used if the question is a brand list, and the interviewing mode is CATI. In other situations, you should use the "open ended question" method. See advantages and disadvantages of the two methods.
To set the semi-open responses option:
semi-open responses.semi-open mandatory. This means that if the respondent selects the "other (specify)" response, they must then provide an open-text answer. To create an “other (specify)” answer using an open-ended question:
other (specify).open.Start question: your closed questionExecute: during, after and even when skippedNoneother (specify)Action: Do not askTarget question: the open-ended questionOverall, as you can see from the table below, open-ended questions have fewer constraints than semi-open responses. Semi-open questions are useful in CATI surveys, where a list of answers needs to be updated directly by fieldwork supervisors to provide additional codes for interviewers to select from; in all other cases, a full open-ended question is likely to be more useful and will be easier to manage.
| Semi-open response | Open-ended question | |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum length | 255 characters | No effective limit |
| Can you define conditions based on the contents of this field? | No | Yes |
| Can it be used for text substitution (e.g. in question texts etc.)? | No | Yes, using the shortcut ??Open?? |
| Maximum number per question in each interview | One semi-open per closed question | No limitation |
|
How is the response managed and controlled? |
Semi-open response (Supervisor) | Modify interview (Supervisor), Kodim |
| Coding the answers with Kodim | Cannot code it via Kodim | Easier to code because it can be run through the Kodim application |
| Supervisor modification options | Cannot review or modify via supervisor app | Can review and modify the response directly from the supervisor app |
| Options for presenting and grouping captured semi-open responses to CATI interviewers | On CATI projects, you can determine what interviewers can see on screen; you can group semi-open responses together for pre-codes. | No visibility to CATI interviewers |
