Use this layout style to present a closed, open or numeric question's response items in one control. For example:

To do so, select all the variable's cells, and in the layout menu, select styles and then response block.
The response block allows you to easily see how the controls of a closed question are displayed (normal question, vertical table, the number of columns). Inactive responses are not visible in response blocks. This means that the responses are re-arranged and do not leave "blanks".
It is easy to define row-shading (where, for instance, every other line is a different shade). It is possible to merge blocks on the same screen, even if they relate to different loops.
A library of response blocks is available and you can decide which one will be used (in the generation settings, screens tab) when you create or verify the screens for a single, multiple or table question. Response blocks preserve their appearance in web interviews.
You can over-ride the default settings in many ways:
By style: e.g. every other row, every other column.
By specific row: e.g. you can specify that the third row is pink.
By specific column: e.g. the first two columns are in bold and italic.
By response: e.g. the "don't knows" are in gray.
By combining any of the above.
properties, then the response block tab.
