Generating a questionnaire's screens

Note: In AskiaDesign, screens are allocated to groups. You may only need a single group, or you may want more than one. You would typically set up more than one where your survey is presented in different ways depending on the context. For example, you might have a group of screens for CATI mode and a second group for CAWI.

Creating a new screen group

To create a new screen group:

  1. Ensure you are working in screen mode.
  2. Open the screens tab, right-click and select new screen group (alternatively, from the screens menu, select new screen group). The screen generation dialog appears.
  3. In screen group, enter a name for the new group.
  4. In library templates, select the template on which you want to base the screens, and click OK. If you click new_screen_group_from_existing, a new screen group will be created based on the screen group that is currently selected in the screens tab of the left-hand pane.
  5. Click OK. A new, empty screen group is created in the screens tab in the left-hand pane.
You can set the layout and behaviour of any screens you generate in the group by going into the settings for the screen group. To do so, right-click the group (be sure to right-click the group, rather than one of the screen within it) and select properties. For more information, see screen group properties.

Generating the screens in an existing group

Caution: this section assumes you want to create re-generate the screens in an existing group. Any changes you have made to the screens in this group will be lost. If you want to generate a set of screens in a new group, without replacing those in an existing group, first create a new group; see creating creating a new screen group.

If you simply want to check your screens to ensure that all of the questions in the survey are present in, use the option verify.

 

To generate the screens in an existing group:

  1. Ensure you are working in screen mode.
  2. At the bottom of the left-hand pane, click the screens tab.
  3. You can set the layout and behaviour of the screens you are about to generate by going into the settings for the screen group. To do, right-click the group and select properties. For more information, see screen group properties.
  4. To generate the screens, right-click the group, and select generate:
  5. If there are any screens already in the group, you will be asked if you want to replace them. If you are not sure whether you want to replace them, answer no. To proceed, answer yes.
  6. AskiaDesign will generate screens for all visible variables, according to the properties specified in the selected library template.

Viewing a new screen

To view a new screen, simply double-click it in the screens tab; it will open in the right-hand pane.

Note: from version 5.4, new screens will be given the same names as the shortcuts of the questions they contain. So, if a screen is generated for question Q1, this screen will also be called Q1. Of course, if you wish you can rename a screen by right-clicking it and selecting rename.

If you subsequently merge two or more screens, the new screen name will consist of the shortcuts of all the questions on the new merged screen, separated by commas (e.g. if you merge two screens with the questions named awareness and favourite, the new screen will be called awareness, favourite).

If you have renamed a screen and subsequently want to revert to the default naming, simply enter a blank string as the name, and askiadesign will automatically revert the name to the default.

Screen group properties

In the design tab of the screen group properties, you can set the properties for the screens that will be generated, including the background and font colours, and the position of the toolbar on the interviewing screens (you can hide the toolbar for Web surveys by selecting hidden).

You can associate a response block and/or ADC to each type of question. For example, to specify a grid ADC for question tables, you would do the following:

By clicking ... next to the response block or ADC, you can define the default properties that will be used for that response block or ADC.
