Chapters enable you to group related questions together, making the questionnaire structure easier to understand and work with. We recommend that you use chapters to structure your questionnaire into sections. Chapters are also a useful way to vary the order in which questions are presented, as you can randomise or rotate the order of the questions within a chapter.

You can also use chapters to display instructions or comments to the interviewer and/or respondent, by specifying the text in the chapter's long caption.

In the question list, chapters are indicated by the icon .

Example

For example, you might start with a first section called "Import", with sub-variables importing data necessary to the survey. You might have a second section called "Screener", with sub-variables determining the respondent’s profile. A third section might be called "Survey part A", etc.

Placing variables into a chapter

To structure your variables, use the buttons, or their corresponding keyboard shortcuts:

To place a question within a chapter, you can drag and drop it onto the chapter, or use the above controls to place the question directly below the chapter, then move it to the right; it will be placed into the chapter.

Importing changes from another copy of the QES/QEX

If changes have been made to one of your survey's chapters in another copy of the QES or QEX (perhaps by one of your co-workers), you can import these changes into your copy. See importing questions from another survey for details.
