Chapters enable you to group related questions together, making the questionnaire structure easier to understand and work with. We recommend that you use chapters to structure your questionnaire into sections. Chapters are also a useful way to vary the order in which questions are presented, as you can randomise or rotate the order of the questions within a chapter.
You can also use chapters to display instructions or comments to the interviewer and/or respondent, by specifying the text in the chapter's long caption.
In the question list, chapters are indicated by the icon

For example, you might start with a first section called "Import", with sub-variables importing data necessary to the survey. You might have a second section called "Screener", with sub-variables determining the respondent’s profile. A third section might be called "Survey part A", etc.

To place a question within a chapter, you can drag and drop it onto the chapter, or use the above controls to place the question directly below the chapter, then move it to the right; it will be placed into the chapter.
The following properties are available for chapters:
Show chapter and sub-questions: Ensures that the respondent will see the chapter (and therefore its long caption), and the variables it contains. An interviewing screen will be generated for the chapter.
Prior to version 5.4.6.0, this option was known as visible during data entry.
You can set this option for multiple questions/chapters at once by selecting the items in the questionnaire list (in the left-hand pane), then right-clicking and selecting set questions, then visible in the context menu.
Hide chapter only: Ensures that the chapter itself will not be displayed during interviewing (so its long caption will not be shown), but the questions within the chapter will be displayed.
Hide chapter and sub-questions: Ensures that neither the chapter itself (i.e. its long caption) nor the questions within it will be displayed during interviewing.
Prior to version 5.4.6.0, this option was known as pause during data entry.
Visible in Analyse: Ensures that the variable and its sub-variables will be visible in both askiaanalyse and askiavista. If un-ticked, the variable and its sub-variables will not appear in askiaanalyse and in askiavista.
You can change this option even after a questionnaire’s fieldwork is completed.
You can set this option for multiple questions/chapters at once by selecting the items in the questionnaire list (in the left-hand pane), then right-clicking and selecting set questions, then visible in analyse in the context menu.
If changes have been made to one of your survey's chapters in another copy of the QES or QEX (perhaps by one of your co-workers), you can import these changes into your copy. See importing questions from another survey for details.
