Use this AskiaDesign feature to randomise or reverse the order in which a chapter's sub-variables appear during interviewing. Sub-variables are the variables within the chapter; you can place variables into a chapter by using the question list.

The following options are available:

• Never change the order of sub-variables: Sub-variables are not randomised or reversed.

• Randomise the order of sub-variables: The order of the sub-variables will be randomly sorted for each respondent. For example, if the variable has three sub-variables: Q1, Q2 and Q3, during data-entry, the respondent’s interview will follow any one of the following orders:

  Q1Q2Q3 ~ Q1Q3Q2 ~ Q2Q1Q3 ~ Q2Q3Q1 ~ Q3Q1Q2 ~ Q3Q2Q1. x being the number of items, the number of different orders is: x².

• Rotate the order of sub-variables: The order of the sub-variables will rotate for each successive respondent. For example, if the variable has three sub-variables- Q1, Q2 and Q3, interviews will ask the sub-variables in the following order, and in a cyclical pattern:
  Intvw1: Q1Q2Q3 ~ Intvw2: Q2Q3Q1 ~ Intvw3: Q3Q1Q2 ~ Intvw4: Q1Q2Q3 ~ Invw5: Q2Q3Q1 ~ etc-. x being the number of items, the number of different orders is: x.

• Invert order: The order of the sub-variables will be reversed. For example, if there are three sub-variables (A, B and C), during data collection, the items will be displayed in the following order: C B A. Note: use seed option must be set for this option to take effect.

• Use seed: Use this option to activate rotation on a list of items which is also the source of one or more link(s). Using this option will ensure that, if the linked variable has no active rotation, it will keep the order of items established by the source’s rotation. If the linked variable is also being rotated, its rotation will be based according to the source’s first rotation.
