Including multiple versions of an image for different languages or questionnaire scenarios

It is possible to vary the image that is displayed for a response, according to the current language in a multi-lingual study, or the questionnaire scenario. For example, you might have an image file that has different versions according to the language that in use in the current interview (e.g one image for English, another for French, another for Spanish, etc.).

To vary an image according to language or questionnaire scenario:

  1. In question mode, associate an appropriate resource with a response by selecting the resource in the resource column of the response list for a closed question. This resource might be one associated with the survey's default language, for example. During an interview, this resource will be replaced automatically by one appropriate to the language or questionnaire scenario, once you have completed this procedure (e.g. if the selected language is Spanish, then an image with Spanish text would be displayed).

  2. In screen mode, open the properties for the first resource (to do so, in the resources tab, right-click the resource and select edit).

  3. Assign a unique ID to this resource. To do so, in the resource properties, click find new; askiadesign will automatically assign a unique (unused) ID to the resource.

  4. If you want to make this resource appear only during interviews in a specific language or languages, do the following: in the language field, select an appropriate language or languages for the resource.

  5. If you want to make this resource appear only in one or more specific questionnaire scenarios, do the following: in the scenarios field, select the questionnaire scenario or scenarios you want to associate with this resource.

  6. Add the other associated resources (e.g. translated versions of an image), and give each of them the same ID as the one you assigned to the first resource in step 3 above. This ensures that these are associated with each other; they are in effect different "versions" of the same resource, and will be displayed according to the questionnaire language or scenario.

  7. For each resource you add, assign it an appropriate language and/or questionnaire scenario.

  8. Once you have carried out steps 6 and 7 for each resource, the correct image will now be displayed during interviewing, according to the interviewing languages and/or questionnaire scenarios you selected.
