Start question (routing instructions)
A routing instruction's start question is the point in the questionnaire at which the routing instruction is evaluated. You should set this to be a point at which, during data collection, the interview will have collected the information required to evaluate the routing instruction's condition. For example, if the routing instruction is based on information collected at Q3, then the start question should be Q3 or later in the questionnaire.

Note: when setting the start question, you can save time by dragging and dropping from the
question list into the
start question list.
The following execute parameters are available to control exactly when the routing instruction will be evaluated during data collection, in relation to the question you have selected:
- Before: The routing instruction will be evaluated just before its start variable is asked.
- During: The routing instruction will be evaluated while its start variable is being asked. For example, let's suppose we have a loop containing the items A, B and C, and a sub-question containing two response items Yes and No. A routing instruction using the
During parameter would enable the respondent to exit the loop.
- After: The routing instruction will be evaluated just after the respondent has answered the start variable.
- Edits: The routing instruction will not be executed in askiadesign, but can be evaluated and executed by using the run the edits feature of AskiaTools. This feature enables you to execute routing instructions after field-work has been completed. This feature enables you to automatically clean or validate data interview by interview without having to manually navigate through each interview.
- Even when skipped: If this option is selected, the routing instruction will be evaluated and executed even when the start question is skipped. From AskiaDesign version 5.1.6.0, this option is selected by default.
- Scenario: The routing instruction will be evaluated only when the specified scenario of the questionnaire is running. For a routing instruction's condition to be evaluated regardless of the current scenario, select "All scenarios" (which is the default).
Note: In AskiaWeb interviews, when a routing instruction’s start variable has been merged onto a screen with other variable(s), the execution time will be tied to that screen.
