Askiatranslator allows you to send your project texts to an external agency for translation:
You export the texts in your questionnaire to a tab-delimited file, and send the file to the agency.
The agency opens the file in Microsoft Excel™, performs the translation, and returns the file.
Finally, you import the translated texts back into your questionnaire.
You can export all texts in the project, even duplicates, or only the unique strings (i.e. each string will be exported once, so it will only need to be translated once).
To export texts for translation:
In the file menu, click open…, and select your questionnaire.
In the file menu, click export all strings for translation… (to export all strings, so common strings - e.g. "Yes" - might appear several times), or export all unique strings for translation... (to export each individual string only once, reducing the number of translations that need to be made).
Select the languages you want to export, and click OK.
Choose a file name and location for your text file and click save.
The file is now ready to send to your translator. When the translator receives your text file, he or she should enter translated texts in Microsoft Excel™ as follows.
To enter translations in Excel:
Start Microsoft Excel™ and, in the File menu, click open….
In files of type, select text files. Then, select your text file and click open.
Step through the Text Import Wizard, accepting the default values (click next, then next again, and finally finish).
Each language is shown in a separate column. The translator should simply amend the texts in the appropriate cells. For example, if he or she is translating from English to French, he or she would move down the French column, entering translated text.
When you receive the file back from the translator, you can then use askiatranslator to import the translated texts back into the .qes file.
To import translated texts:
In the file menu, click open…, and select your questionnaire.
In the file menu, click import from translation….
If you want to avoid over-writing any texts that may have changed in the QES file since the texts were exported, select only import unchanged captions since the export.
If you originally exported only unique strings, you need to select copy over identical strings. This ensures that duplicate strings, although translated only once, will be applied to all instances in your QES. To match strings, the system will use the original captions and not the question/response IDs.
In reference language, select the original language in which you supplied the texts to the translator (i.e. if you supplied the translator with texts in English, you would select English). When you perform the import, askiatranslator creates a file containing any texts that have changed, and that therefore need to go back to the translator.
Click ..., then select the text file you received from your translator and click open.
Finally, click OK. The translated texts are imported back into your questionnaire.
In the file menu, click save.
